Freedom Monument by Will-Yoow
in honor of 75 years of freedom

Deventer artist Will-Yoow (Wiljo Damstra-Rouwenhorst) designed a new freedom monument for an unforgettable Liberation Day. A Liberation Day that revolved around 75 years of freedom in the Netherlands, but also pointed out the vulnerability of freedom due to the oppressive corona pandemic.

Will-Yoow made two pigeons that together loosen the symbolic ribbon that held Deventer in its grip and open the way to freedom. The colors red, white, blue and orange symbolize patriotism that fits seamlessly with the celebration of the liberation 75 years ago. The red heart symbolizes the love for the city of Deventer, but also the heart for life and for the care that was so important to our society in the corona year 2020.

This modern monument was organized by Street Art Streets in honor of 75 years of freedom and was presented on May 5, 2020 by Deputy Mayor and Alderman of Culture Carlo Verhaar.
